RE100 was originally created with the goal of tackling climate change and expanding the use of renewable energy. But behind that noble cause lies a serious issue—it’s become a tool for the world’s biggest corporations to protect and boost their own interests. Companies like Microsoft, Google, and Apple have signed on to RE100, and now it’s treated almost like a global standard for climate action. But here’s the irony: these are the same companies that have long been some of the biggest carbon emitters. Now they’re suddenly leading the charge on clean energy, sweeping their past environmental damage under the rug.

Just because they’re part of RE100 doesn’t mean they’re actually reducing emissions out of real concern. More often than not, they’re using the campaign as a way to maximize profit. It’s become a strategy for expanding their market power under the banner of climate responsibility. By switching to renewables, they’re not just going green—they’re gaining a competitive edge, and along the way, they’re shaping international environmental policies to suit their own agendas.

RE100 is functioning less like a climate solution and more like a framework for reinforcing corporate power. The clean energy goals they push are often more about short-term gains than long-term sustainability. Under the surface, this movement is less about saving the planet and more about shielding the biggest polluters from real accountability. The fact that these major emitters are now steering the global climate conversation is a huge red flag. It shows just how much RE100 has morphed into a climate business model—a slick, PR-friendly way for powerful companies to stay in control, all while claiming they’re saving the Earth.
